Claire's Story

Here is a piece from one of our volunteers Claire, it might help you to decide if you are thinking about volunteering.

claire - volunteer

After moving to Penrith from Newcastle I was looking to do some voluntary work last year to get me out in the community and having seen Eden Animal Rescue charity shop in town, I decided to look on their website to see what voluntary roles were available.

As an owner of two dogs and being a massive dog lover , the role of dog walker seemed perfect for me! After my initial induction , I was told I could come and help out which ever day suited me which was a real bonus and I now volunteer at the centre a couple of times a week.

The dogs are so well cared for and it’s great to be able to play a part in caring for them while they wait for their furever homes! I often spend extra time with my favourite pooches after they’ve all been walked and i can honestly say that I am so happy to be part of Eden Animal Rescue as it’s not only helped me to meet new people ( everyone at the centre is so lovely!) but I feel that I am contributing positively to the dogs lives and that is an amazing feeling!

I would encourage any dog lover to think about volunteering with Eden Animal Rescue, not only will they enjoy it but the dogs will really appreciate it too ( often shown with lots of slobbery kisses!)

Lisa's Story - Employer Supported Volunteering

What is Employer Supported Volunteering?

We sat down with Lisa to find out how being given time by her employer to volunteer – through Employer Supported Volunteering (CVS) – has helped her.

Lisa explains how CVS has helped her to develop communication skills, customer relationship skills, make friends and connections, and benefitted her mental health.

We also hear from Sarah at Eden Animal Rescue, who explains why volunteers like Lisa are so important to helping them do their work.

Judith explains how giving employees time to volunteer not only helps the individual, but also benefits the employer with staff skills development, retention, motivation and more.

Sue's Story

Here is a piece from one of our volunteers Sue, it might help you to decide if you are thinking about volunteering.

I first became involved with Eden Animal Rescue when I adopted my cat Maisie in 1998, then began helping out occasionally. In 2011 at Hardendale, Shap I got the chance to become more directly involved, helping with the care of the resident cats and kittens and continue to do so alongside other family  members at the fantastic new centre at Newbiggin, Temple Sowerby, which is run by an amazing Animal Care Team.

Being a cat volunteer is so rewarding, especially knowing you have contributed in some way, helping each animal on its journey to a better life in a loving home.

Animal Care

Without a doubt this is one of the most important jobs that we ask our volunteers to help us do, as it can be very time consuming when doing the job correctly. We are looking for Volunteers that will help with feeding, cleaning out cat pens, cleaning out hutches, grooming, and socializing the animals. We ask our volunteers to arrive at the centre at 9am to start these tasks.

Gardening & Maintenance

Do you enjoy gardening and spending time outside in our beautiful Cumbrian weather? If so, we have several areas that need developing and maintaining on site to give enrichment to the animals, staff, volunteers and public that visit. On site we often have things that need fixing or building, from cat scratching posts to
